Choosing a Kitchen Maker Near Knock and Claremorris

What to ask, what to look at and who does what, from a family workshop on the Knock road that has designed, made and fitted kitchens since 1993.

Choose a kitchen maker you can visit, one that designs, builds and fits the kitchen itself, and one that gives you a single team from the first measure to the final handover. Then go and see the kitchens it has made.

Where we fit in

Gurteen Kitchens is a family kitchen maker in Gurteen, a small village a mile out the Knock road from Ballyhaunis, an easy trip from Claremorris and Knock. Micheal Brennan founded the business in 1993, and the same team designs, manufactures and fits every kitchen, with no subcontractors along the way.

See the kitchens we design, make and fit, or visit the showroom first. It is free to visit and there is no obligation.

Kitchen Maker, Kitchen Company or Fitter: Who Does What

Search for kitchen companies around Knock or Claremorris and three kinds of business come up under the same heading. Any of them can deliver a good kitchen. The difference is who draws it, who builds it, and who you ring when something needs sorting.

Kitchen maker Kitchen retailer Independent fitter
Who designs it The maker, drawn to your room A showroom designer, working from the ranges they sell Usually you, or whoever sold you the units
Who builds the cabinets The maker, in its own workshop A manufacturer elsewhere, in set unit widths Whoever supplied the units
How it meets the walls Made to the measurements of the room Standard sizes, with filler panels to close the gaps Depends on what was bought
Who fits it Often the maker’s own team Their fitters or a subcontractor The fitter
Who you ring after The people who made it The shop, which may pass it on The fitter for the fitting, the supplier for the units

None of this makes one route right for every house. A straightforward room on a tight budget can be well served by a good retailer and a careful fitter. Where the walls are out of true, the house is older, or you want the kitchen built to the room rather than to a catalogue, a maker is usually the better bet. We weigh that up in more detail in bespoke or standard kitchens.

Six Questions to Ask Any Kitchen Maker

Put the same six questions to every kitchen maker and kitchen fitter on your list. The answers tell you more than a brochure will, and they make the quotes comparable.

01

Where is it made, and can I see it?

Ask to see finished kitchens in person, not only photographs. A maker that builds locally should be glad to show you its work.

Our answer: in our own workshop in Gurteen, where the showroom is too.

02

Who measures the room?

The person who measures should belong to the team that builds the kitchen. A measurement passed between businesses is where fitting-day surprises start.

Our answer: we measure your space ourselves, then draw up the design.

03

Who fits it?

Ask whether the fitters are the maker’s own team or a subcontractor, and who is responsible if a panel or a door is out.

Our answer: our own team fits every kitchen we make.

04

What does the quote include?

Worktops, appliances, plumbing, electrics, taking out the old kitchen and making good the walls. Two quotes only compare fairly when they cover the same list.

05

How long, and from when?

Ask for the lead time from final design sign-off, not from the first visit, and whether it includes fitting. It is the date that matters when the builder, plumber and electrician are booked around it.

06

Who comes back afterwards?

Hinges and drawer runners sometimes need a small adjustment once a new kitchen has settled in. Find out who makes that visit, and whether it is the people who built it.

Bring these six questions to the showroom and put them to us in person.

Why a Local Kitchen Maker Is Easier to Deal With

When the workshop is close by, you can see the finishes in real light before you commit, the person who drew the design can come back out to check a wall, and anything that needs attention after fitting is a phone call to the people who built it.

A kitchen made to measure also suits the rooms that standard units struggle with: walls that are not quite straight, alcoves, chimney breasts and sloping ceilings. Larders and internal storage can be built around what you actually keep in them, like the pantry in this photograph.

We make and fit kitchens right across the county and further afield with the same team. See the finished work in our kitchen design and installation projects.

Kitchen Maker or Cabinet Maker? Often the Same Workshop

The skills that build a kitchen build the rest of a house’s fitted furniture too. If you are looking for a cabinet maker for a utility room, a larder or a run of built-in storage, ask your kitchen maker first.

Alongside kitchens, our workshop makes pantry units, utility rooms, media units, wardrobes and other storage, drawn to the room in the same way. Doing them together keeps the finishes matched from one room to the next. See our bespoke furniture.

Common Questions

How do I choose a kitchen maker near me?
Start with makers close enough to visit. See their kitchens in person, ask who measures the room, who builds the cabinets and who fits them, and compare quotes that cover the same list of work. A maker that designs, builds and fits the kitchen itself gives you one team to deal with from start to finish.
What is the difference between a kitchen maker and a kitchen fitter?
A kitchen maker designs and builds the cabinets, usually in its own workshop, and often fits them too. A kitchen fitter installs units that someone else has made or sold. Gurteen Kitchens does both: we design, make and fit every kitchen with our own team.
